Ron is an experienced and well-recognized litigation attorney in the state of Montana. Ron’s trial practice is diverse and includes complex litigation, business transaction litigation, insurance defense, and construction law disputes. He has also litigated important civil rights cases, school law and gender equity issues. Ron has developed a strong expertise in product liability and environmental law.

Before joining Gough, Shanahan, Ron was the law clerk to Honorable W.J. Jameson, U.S. Senior District Judge for the District of Montana (1969-1970).

Ron is admitted to practice in both state and federal courts in Montana and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. He is also admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court. His professional organizations include the State Bar of Montana; American Bar Association, State Membership chair, 1973-1977; the American Judicature Society, Board Member, 1979-1983; American Law Institute; and American Bar Foundation, State President, 1987-present. He is a member of the Board of Visitors at the University of Montana School of Law.

 

Ron grew up in a small community in Western Montana and has a deep attachment to the state and its citizens.

 

 

 

 

 

He works with several charitable organizations including the United Way, which honored Ron in 1998 for 25 years of service and dedication, the Florence Crittenton Home, and several other organizations to help and guide social needs of youth. He is also a past board member and President of Helena’s Grandstreet Community Theater.

Ron and Mignon Waterman have been married for 42 years. Mignon served in the Montana State Senate. Ron and Mignon have two adult children, a loving physician daughter-in-law and two wonderful grandchildren. Unfortunately, they all live in Chicago – but, as you can tell, at least one of the grand kids has a very independent mind!
