Waterman won't take PAC money
Ron Waterman, a candidate for chief justice of the Montana Supreme Court, said Monday his campaign will not accept money from Political Action Committees.
Because the office is non-partisan, Waterman said accepting PAC money would be inconsistent with his belief that the courts ``must be free of political influence and decide cases on the law and the facts.
``The position of chief justice is too important to leave the public with the impression that it is for sale to the higher bidder.’’
Waterman issued a news release that said his opponent, Mike McGrath, had accepted $2,750 from PACs through March 5, 2008, according to campaign finance reports filed by McGrath. The PACs include Citigroup Inc., Employees of NW Energy and Montana Gas and Oil, Waterman said.
``I feel it is necessary to assert leadership in this area, despite the impact this may have on raising money for my campaign. I will only accept donations from individuals. I will bring the same leadership to the court,’’ Waterman, a Helena attorney, said.
Waterman said Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer and one of the presidential candidates have refused to accept PAC money ``because it has the appearance of an interest group trying to buy the influence of a candidate. I acknowledge my opponent has a year’s lead time in fund raising and my decision not to accept PAC money may impact my campaign’s bottom line. However this is too important a principle to compromise.”
